Prince William has been appointed as the new patron of the SAS Regimental Association (SASRA), the charitable arm of the UK’s elite special forces unit. This role reflects his longstanding dedication to the armed forces and will see him act as the primary figurehead for the organization.
William’s military journey began after he graduated from university in 2005. He joined the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, completing a rigorous 44-week Officer Cadet course. By December 2006, he had earned his commission and was assigned to the Household Cavalry (Blues and Royals) as a second lieutenant. In this capacity, he commanded a troop of four Scimitar light tanks and quickly rose to the rank of lieutenant within a year.
In 2008, the Prince expanded his military experience with attachments to the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy. During this time, he acquired valuable flying skills that would later serve him well as a search and rescue pilot and a volunteer air ambulance pilot. His commitment to military service has earned him several official titles, including Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps (AAC) and Colonel of the Welsh Guards.
In his new capacity with SASRA, Prince William will focus on supporting the Association’s welfare initiatives. This includes raising essential funds and providing assistance to serving personnel, veterans, and their dependants. His appointment has been described as a “proud achievement” for the 43-year-old royal, reinforcing the regiment’s connection to the monarchy and enhancing its efforts to ensure long-term care for its soldiers and their families.
