Local Man to Run Seven Marathons in Memory of His Sister

A man from Dumbarton is set to complete a remarkable challenge by running seven marathons in seven days, all in memory of his late sister, Monica McTaggart. The event will take place from March 23 to March 29, 2024, and will cover a total distance of 309 kilometers, stretching from his family home to the island of Tiree and back. Monica passed away on March 12, 2016, following a courageous battle with leukaemia.

Harry McTaggart, 27, has chosen this specific route to honour the cherished memories of family holidays spent on Tiree, a destination that holds deep significance for his family. “Tiree was a holiday destination where countless memories were made, especially after our aunt and uncle built a house on the island,” he explained. “This journey retraces the path we took many times on family holidays, only this time by foot.”

During her illness, Monica received exceptional care from the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre. Harry highlighted the profound impact of the support they received throughout her treatment. “Anyone who has encountered the Beatson will know the tremendous care they offer, even on patients’ very worst days,” he remarked. This experience has motivated him to give back to the community that provided so much for his family.

The fundraising effort has already garnered over £7,000, with proceeds directed towards two important charities: the Paul O’Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre and the Beatson Cancer Charity. Both organisations focus on advancing research into leukaemia treatment, providing hope for future cures. Harry expressed his dedication to supporting these causes, stating, “On this occasion, I am raising money for two charities. Supporting research for advancements in leukaemia treatment I hope will offer a cure for others.”

The Beatson Cancer Charity plays a pivotal role in the Glasgow area, closely interacting with clinical departments of the Beatson to support vital research efforts. Harry encouraged the community to participate in his journey, saying, “Any support in donations, company on the run, or well wishes for the journey would be greatly appreciated!”

Chloe Coghill, Community Fundraiser at Beatson Cancer Charity, praised Harry’s initiative. She stated, “Harry’s run is a powerful way to remember his sister Monica and to honour the care she received at The Beatson. We are incredibly grateful that he has chosen to support Beatson Cancer Charity in her memory. The funds he raises will help us continue providing care and support for patients and families who rely on The Beatson every day.”

For those interested in supporting Harry’s mission, donations can be made through the official fundraiser page. His inspiring commitment not only pays tribute to his sister but also aims to make a significant impact in the fight against leukaemia.
