Controversy Erupts Over Library Director’s Historical Claims

Disputes over historical narratives have emerged in Montenegro, particularly involving the library director of JU NB “Radosav Ljumovic.” Andrija Klikovac, the head of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) council in the Capital Assembly, publicly criticized Slavica Ilincic for allegedly fabricating historical facts. His remarks followed Ilincic’s assertion that the library in Podgorica historically bore a Serbian name, a claim he disputes as a distortion of history.

Klikovac’s comments were made via the social media platform X on January 25, 2026. He accused Ilincic and her management team of obscuring their backgrounds, including allegations of possessing purchased diplomas and harboring nationalist sentiments. His statement read, “Like part of the management team, Ilincic is fabricating historical facts and continuing to engage in forgery.”

The controversy raises questions about the integrity of leadership within cultural institutions in Montenegro. Klikovac further challenged the accountability of other political figures, specifically questioning whether Gordan Stojovic, a representative of the PES party, would respond or remain silent due to pressure from political allies.

This incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding national identity and historical interpretation in the region. As libraries are often seen as custodians of cultural heritage, the allegations against Ilincic pose significant implications for public trust in such institutions. The discourse surrounding this issue reflects broader societal divisions, prompting further examination of how history is presented and interpreted in contemporary Montenegro.

As this situation develops, the responses from both Ilincic and other political leaders will be closely observed, given the sensitive nature of national identity and historical representation in Montenegro.
