Asda Recalls Sandals Over Serious Chemical Risk to Customers

An urgent recall has been issued by Asda for the George Ladies Double Buckle Flatbed Sandal due to a serious chemical risk. The sandals, specifically in lilac and sage colors, are being removed from shelves as they contain nickel levels exceeding the maximum permissible limits. The recall aims to protect customers from potential allergic reactions linked to skin contact with the product.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards has confirmed that the excess nickel content in these sandals poses a significant health risk. Nickel is recognized as a skin sensitiser, which can provoke allergic reactions, particularly when it comes into direct and prolonged contact with the skin. According to the UK Health Security Agency, skin exposure to nickel can lead to trace amounts of the metal being released from such products.

Asda is advising customers who purchased the affected sandals to cease usage immediately and return them to their nearest store. Notably, a receipt is not required for customers to receive a full refund. Other color variants of the sandal are not implicated in this recall. For further assistance, customers can reach out to Asda Customer Relations at 0330 053 0111.

In a statement, Asda highlighted that tests revealed the rivet part of the sandal’s trim could contain nickel levels that exceed the permissible limits under the REACH regulations. The supermarket noted that this could result in adverse skin reactions for some customers.

This recall is not the only recent concern for Asda. The retailer also withdrew its 10 Mini Duck Spring Rolls with Hoisin Dip from sale after it was discovered that the product was labeled with an incorrect expiry date. Customers who purchased this item with a use-by date of December 29 are advised to return it for a full refund as well, due to safety concerns regarding consumption.

As product safety remains a paramount concern, consumers are urged to stay informed about recalls and to check product labels carefully. The actions taken by Asda highlight the importance of compliance with safety regulations and the retailer’s commitment to customer well-being.
