Veteran broadcaster Billy Sloan has announced the conclusion of his tenure at BBC Radio Scotland, marking the end of an era after 11 years of captivating audiences. In an emotional farewell posted on social media platform X, Sloan invited fans to share their favourite moments from his show as he prepared for his final broadcast on December 27, 2025.
Sloan’s last programme will air at 22:00 GMT, and he encouraged listeners to reminisce about memorable interviews with notable guests such as Paul McCartney, U2, Elvis Costello, and The Who. His heartfelt message resonated with fans, many of whom took to social media to express their appreciation for his work. “Billy, we’re about an hour behind tonight so you’re close to your signoff,” one listener wrote. “So far the first hour has been incredible, you will be missed. Thank you for the weekly entertainment for the last 11 years.” Another chimed in, “My most memorable moment was about five years ago when you finally read our Twitter answer aloud.”
The decision to end Sloan’s programme follows his public criticism of BBC management after the announcement of significant changes to the station’s line-up. Alongside Sloan, fellow presenters Roddy Hart, Iain Anderson, and Natasha Raskin Sharp also found their shows axed as part of the restructuring process.
In his farewell message, Sloan noted that a new boss has taken over at the station, stating, “I don’t figure in her future plans.” He expressed his reluctance to step down but acknowledged the shifting landscape of the station, which is moving towards a format prioritizing “easy listening” and broader mainstream appeal.
Sloan declared, “I DON’T play the hits… the songs you keep hearing over and over again. Instead, I prefer to give listeners the opportunity to enjoy alternative tracks they wouldn’t normally expect.” He is determined to leave on a high note, planning a series of special shows that will reflect on the best moments from his time at BBC Radio Scotland.
Listeners can look forward to revisiting interviews with music legends such as Mick Jagger, Alice Cooper, and Pete Townshend over the upcoming weeks. Sloan also plans to share his favourite singles, albums, and gigs from 2025, featuring music from artists including Oasis, Simple Minds, and Fontaines D.C.. He aims to conclude his final broadcast with cherished compositions from renowned artists like David Bowie and The Clash, along with unexpected musical selections.
As he prepares to sign off, Sloan extended his gratitude to the musicians he has collaborated with and to his dedicated listeners around the world. “Your continued support is greatly appreciated,” he concluded, underscoring the strong connection he has built with his audience over the years.
