Netflix Welcomes All Seasons of ‘Motherland’ Just in Time for Christmas

Netflix has expanded its content library by adding all four seasons of the acclaimed BBC sitcom, Motherland. The addition includes a special Christmas episode titled Last Christmas, which aired in 2022. This new episode complements the first three seasons that have been available on the platform, providing viewers with a full experience of the series just in time for the festive season.

In the 30-minute festive episode, Julia Johnstone, portrayed by Anna Maxwell Martin, hosts Christmas celebrations alongside fellow characters, including Kevin Brady (played by Paul Ready), Liz (played by Diane Morgan), and Amanda Hughes (portrayed by Lucy Punch). The storyline unfolds with a twist that has resonated with audiences, leading Netflix to promote the episode with the tagline: “friends, family and festivities – what could go wrong?”

The show, created by Sharon Horgan, is set in West London and humorously navigates the challenges of middle-class motherhood. It has received widespread acclaim, boasting a remarkable 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewer reviews highlight the series as “one of the best TV comedies I’ve seen in the last ten years” and praise its engaging content as “good fun, and easy watching.”

As viewers have shared their thoughts on social media, one user on X (formerly Twitter) remarked, “Watching #Motherland on Netflix and it’s hilarious. Anyone with young kids will relate. If you haven’t seen it, give it a try.” Another account echoed this sentiment, stating, “‘Motherland’ is absolutely brilliant! I hugely recommend it. So funny. Three series to enjoy too.”

Despite the emotional conclusion of Motherland in 2022, the franchise continues to thrive. A spin-off series, Amandaland, has been announced, focusing on the character Amanda, played by Lucy Punch, as she navigates life in South Harlesden following her divorce. The spin-off will see the return of beloved characters, including Amanda’s mother Felicity (portrayed by Joanna Lumley) and her friend Anne Flynn (played by Philippa Dunne).

Amandaland has been renewed for a second series, set to air on iPlayer and BBC One in 2026. A Christmas special is also in the works, featuring the return of the main cast and the addition of Jennifer Saunders, who will portray Aunt Joan, Felicity’s sister. Earlier this year, Lucy Punch expressed her excitement about the upcoming season, stating, “I’m beyond excited to get started on Amandaland Series two with our brilliantly talented lovely cast. The Christmas special is going to be an absolute cracker – it’s like totes fire, with all the festive feels, for reals. Slay bells!”

With its successful blend of humor and relatable themes, Motherland continues to attract viewers, ensuring that both new and returning fans can enjoy the series in its entirety this holiday season.
