Liverpool Hosts Tribute Concert for Radio City Legend Johnny Kennedy

A tribute concert celebrating the life of renowned Radio City DJ Johnny Kennedy is set to take place at the Liverpool Cricket Club on December 18, 2023. The sold-out event will honor Kennedy, who entertained listeners across Merseyside for over two decades. His legacy will be commemorated with performances led by Lady Anne Dodd, widow of the famous comedian Sir Ken Dodd, and Liverpool’s official singer in residence, Danielle Thomas.

Kennedy, affectionately known as JK, passed away on January 24, 2023, at the age of 88. He left behind his wife, broadcaster and former ECHO journalist Linda McDermott, who expressed her deep pride in his contributions to the community. The concert’s proceeds will benefit the Liverpool Taxi Drivers Children in Care Outing Fund, one of the numerous charities Kennedy supported throughout his illustrious career.

Throughout his life, Kennedy was a beloved figure in Liverpool’s entertainment scene, known for his humor and charitable efforts. His radio show became a staple for many, and some factories even coordinated tea breaks around his broadcasts, particularly for his popular “Bride of the Week” segment. Beyond radio, Kennedy was a talented singer, teacher, and comedian, holding the record for 300 appearances at the Liverpool Empire Theatre, where he starred in pantomimes and variety shows, including a remarkable 23-year run in the musical “Her Benny.”

Kennedy’s commitment to philanthropy was evident in his remarkable endurance feats. He famously ran 80 miles non-stop from Anfield Stadium to Barnsley Football Club to fund kidney dialysis machines, an event that saw him waved off by football legend Sir Kenny Dalglish. He also completed the 54-mile London to Brighton run just a day after winning television’s New Faces alongside comedy icons Les Dennis and Lenny Henry.

In a heartfelt tribute, Linda McDermott stated, “I’m so proud of my beloved Johnny and how he used his awesome array of talents to raise hundreds of thousands for so many charities including incubators for the Women’s Hospital Newborn Appeal and countless water pumps to help children dying in third world countries for want of clean water.” She emphasized Kennedy’s love for Liverpool and its people, expressing gratitude for the entertainers uniting in his name to continue his good work.

The tribute concert, which will be hosted by broadcaster Frankie Connor, promises an afternoon filled with celebration and remembrance. Tickets are available by calling 0151 291 6030. As the city of Liverpool comes together to honor a beloved legend, the impact of Johnny Kennedy’s life and legacy continues to resonate with many.
