The annual Tynwald Christmas Carol Service is set to take place at St George’s Church in Douglas on December 11, 2023, at 13:10. Laurence Skelly MLC, President of Tynwald, has invited the public and local business community to join in this festive celebration. The event promises a rich programme of choral music that embodies the spirit of Christmas.
Attendees can expect performances from the Tynwald Choir, the Isle of Man Arts Council Community Choir, and a brass ensemble. The Clerk of Tynwald has carefully arranged the Order of Service to include a mix of beloved carols and lesser-known festive pieces. The service will conclude around 14:00, after which guests are invited to enjoy refreshments, including tea, coffee, and traditional mince pies. A retiring collection will be taken during the event.
President Skelly expressed his gratitude to The Venerable Irene Cowell and the St George’s team for their hospitality in hosting the service, emphasizing the event’s role in fostering community spirit during the festive season.
The celebrations will continue with the annual Mince Pie and Tynwald Tour on December 15, 2023. Hosted by Sarah Maltby MHK and her father, former MHK and MLC David Cretney, this event is popular among locals and visitors alike. Participants are encouraged to gather at the Finch Road entrance to the iconic ‘Wedding Cake’ building at 18:00, with the guided tour commencing at 18:30.
The Tynwald, recognized as the oldest continuous parliament in the world, has a rich history spanning over 1,000 years. The guided tour will offer a unique glimpse into the island’s parliamentary buildings, filled with tradition and heritage.
Families can look forward to free seasonal treats, hot drinks, and fruit juice for children following the tour, creating a welcoming atmosphere for all. Organizers stress the importance of adult supervision for children to ensure everyone’s safety.
Attendees are encouraged to bring cameras to capture the festive decorations and memorable moments throughout the evening. Those with mobility requirements are invited to reach out in advance to arrange appropriate accommodations.
