Chef AJ Inspires Haberdashers’ Monmouth Students with Culinary Skills

Students at Haberdashers’ Monmouth School received a unique glimpse into the culinary profession during a recent workshop led by Alistair Turner, known as Chef AJ, on January 21, 2024. This event marked an important occasion for the school, which is the only institution in Wales offering Leith’s Education courses, a prominent provider of accredited culinary qualifications in the UK.

Chef AJ, who is affiliated with Leith’s Education, guided students through the process of creating chicken birria tacos, allowing them to refine essential culinary skills such as knife techniques, seasoning, and proper chicken preparation. His involvement highlighted the school’s commitment to practical food education.

Inspiration Through Experience

“Everyone looks up to Leith’s to produce the best graduates,” said Chef AJ, reflecting on the esteemed reputation of the culinary school. The workshop was particularly beneficial for students in Key Stage 5, with one student expressing enthusiasm about their future plans: “I want to do a gap year and be a chalet girl for a few months. Having the Leith’s qualification will help me because it is really well recognized and will boost my confidence in the kitchen. It’s really nice to have Chef AJ here to watch us cook and inspire us.”

Chef AJ’s journey into the culinary arts is anything but conventional. Initially pursuing a degree in architecture, he soon realized it wasn’t his true calling. He shifted his focus to obtain a culinary diploma from Leith’s in London, where he discovered his passion for cooking. After five years of experience as a chef at Rick Stein’s in Cornwall, he transitioned into education, eventually becoming a food teacher and head of food at a school in Cornwall. Today, he is back at Leith’s, inspiring the next generation of chefs.

A Pathway to Culinary Careers

This visit not only provided practical skills but also opened doors to various career pathways in the culinary industry. Students learned that opportunities extend beyond traditional roles, encompassing food writing, private chef positions, and even culinary work on yachts. The skills acquired during this workshop are expected to have lasting benefits, equipping students for future endeavors in the food sector.

Chef AJ emphasized the importance of education in the culinary field, stating, “This opportunity teaches students skills in real-life settings, which they can carry forward into their future careers.” By engaging directly with students, he has ignited a passion for cooking that may shape their professional journeys.

The collaboration between Haberdashers’ Monmouth School and Leith’s Education exemplifies the value of practical experience in education. As students explore their culinary interests, the insights provided by experienced professionals like Chef AJ will undoubtedly serve as a source of motivation and guidance.
