Victorians Face Public Transport Fare Increase Starting January 2026

Public transport fares across Victoria, Australia, are set to increase beginning January 1, 2026. The full daily fare cap for public transport users in Melbourne and other regions will rise to $11.40, marking a 40-cent increase from the previous cap of $11.00. This adjustment will affect fares for Zone 1, Zone 1+2 metropolitan areas, and the regional fare cap.

Despite concerns from the public regarding the rising cost of living, Transport Victoria has defended the changes as part of its annual fare review, which aims to maintain equity for all users. For those eligible for concessions, the daily cap remains significantly lower at $5.70 for Zones 1 and 2, providing some relief for vulnerable passengers.

The fare adjustments include a reduction on weekends and public holidays. Full fare passengers will only pay a maximum of $8.00, while concession holders will be capped at $4.00.

The announcement has sparked considerable backlash among the public. Many commuters expressed their frustrations on social media, with one user calling the fare hike “insane,” noting that the costs are approaching those of driving in the city. Another commentator highlighted the struggle of keeping up with living expenses, stating, “Most people don’t get annual pay rises. How do they expect us to keep up with the cost of living?”

Some users pointed out that the fare increase may inadvertently encourage fare evasion, suggesting that lower fares could lead to higher compliance among users. “I feel like if they make it cheaper, more people would tap and it’ll increase the profit,” one commuter remarked.

In response to the criticisms, Transport Victoria reiterated the necessity of the fare adjustments. “Fares are reviewed each year and adjusted as needed, with changes applied statewide, ensuring equity for all Victorians,” the department stated. They emphasized that public transport fares contribute significantly to the operational costs of the bus, tram, and train networks.

As the new year approaches, commuters in Victoria will need to reassess their travel budgets, with many bracing for the financial impact of the fare increase.
