Road Closure Causes Traffic Chaos Near New Lidl Store

Shoppers at Festival Park are facing significant delays as a critical road remains closed due to ongoing construction work for a new Lidl store. The closure of Pavilion Drive, which stretches between Cobridge Road and the Greyhound Way junction, has led to severe traffic congestion, particularly during the weekends.

The closure, initiated on January 12, 2024, was sanctioned by Stoke-on-Trent City Council to facilitate essential construction activities, including drain connections, kerbing, and island alterations. As a result, shoppers have been redirected to access the retail park via Greyhound Way off Waterloo Road or Festival Way by the flyover. These alternative routes have also become heavily congested, as they are now the primary access points for visitors.

Motorists using Cobridge Road are experiencing delays as well, with many unable to find shortcuts around the busy traffic lights at Greyhound Way. This disruption has created a ripple effect throughout the surrounding area, compounding the difficulties faced by both shoppers and local residents.

The new Lidl store is set to become the chain’s tenth location in North Staffordshire, joining existing branches in cities such as Leek, Longton, Stoke, Burslem, Hanley, Newcastle, Bentilee, Tunstall, and Kidsgrove. As construction progresses, the busy retail park is expected to draw even more customers, increasing the urgency for a resolution to the ongoing traffic issues.

Local residents have expressed frustration over the extended road closure and the resulting congestion. Many are hopeful that once the construction is completed, the addition of the new store will ultimately benefit the community by enhancing shopping options and creating jobs.

The situation remains dynamic, and shoppers are urged to plan their visits accordingly. With the ongoing construction and anticipated traffic challenges, staying informed about alternative routes will be essential for a smoother shopping experience at Festival Park.
