Community Skills Centre Opens at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital Site

UPDATE: The Community Skills Centre officially opened today on the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) construction site, aiming to boost local employment opportunities in Shropshire. This urgent initiative, delivered by VINCI Building in collaboration with Integrated Health Projects (IHP) and Shropshire Council, offers immediate access to training and workshops for job seekers.

The centre is designed to support individuals currently unemployed or seeking to change careers, with a focus on construction-related trades, health and safety, and essential workplace skills. Workshops, practical training sessions, and employability events will be held regularly, providing vital resources for community members.

The first cohort of job seekers has already started a six-week program, aimed at securing employment with IHP or its subcontractors after the holiday season. This initiative is part of a multimillion-pound construction project scheduled to open in 2028.

Tony Grindrod, regional director at VINCI Building, stated:

“We’re proud to be working with our local partners to create a space where people can learn, grow and take steps toward long-term employment.”

The centre is also open for local educators and organizations to enhance skills in the construction sector. It will provide pre-employment courses, site open days, and support for obtaining industry-recognized qualifications, all backed by VINCI Building.

Councillor Andy Hall, portfolio holder for children and education at Shropshire Council, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating:

“This is a brilliant example of partnership working in action. By bringing together local employers and organizations, we’re helping to remove barriers to employment.”

The Community Skills Centre will operate throughout the construction of RSH, offering ongoing training and dedicated support for those facing various employment challenges. This initiative not only aims to create jobs but also ensures lasting social value for the community.

As this project unfolds, it promises to make a substantial impact on local employment and skills development. Stay tuned for further updates as the centre continues to foster opportunities for Shropshire residents.
