Serbia’s Foreign Minister Urges Regional Unity for EU Progress

UPDATE: In a striking statement today, Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Đurić responded to comments made by Montenegro’s Prime Minister Milojko Spajić, emphasizing that regional cooperation is vital for progress toward European Union membership. This urgent message highlights the ongoing discussions regarding the EU’s expansion in the Western Balkans.

Just announced: Spajić stated that Montenegro aims to join the EU by 2028, claiming the entire Western Balkans deserves a place in the Union. However, Đurić countered, arguing that ambition alone will not accelerate any nation’s EU journey.

According to Đurić, Spajić’s remarks inadvertently reinforce the assertion made by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić that EU expansion can only succeed through strengthened cooperation among all regional actors. “The readiness of some politicians in the region to distance themselves from family and neighbors will not hasten anyone’s path to the EU,” Đurić stated on platform X.

This statement comes amid rising tensions and competition in the region, where leaders are urged to advocate for each other rather than undermine their neighbors. “It is better for all of us when we lobby for each other publicly and privately, not against each other,” he added, emphasizing the need for unity.

Đurić stressed that while each country has its own pace and challenges, the ultimate decision-making power lies with Brussels and EU member states, who dictate the speed of accession based on their interests.

“We must be optimistic and ambitious, but we should also be realistic. It is essential to leap before we proclaim success,” Đurić concluded, underlining the importance of collaborative efforts.

Spajić’s recent comments reflect a growing sense of urgency among regional leaders to expedite EU integration, suggesting a shared vision for the future. He reiterated, “I agree that the entire Western Balkans should ultimately be aligned with the EU. However, we will be waiting for you there starting from 2028 and hope you will genuinely accelerate the process for other candidates in the region.”

This exchange of statements comes at a critical time as the Western Balkans seek to enhance their prospects for EU membership. The call for unity and mutual support among the countries in this region is louder than ever, raising hopes for a more integrated future.

The situation remains dynamic, and all eyes will be on how regional leaders respond to these calls for collaboration in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
