Urgent Protests Erupt Over Wastewater Plant in Botun, Referendum Set

UPDATE: Protests in Botun intensify as residents rally against the planned construction of a wastewater treatment plant (PPOV) in the KAP industrial zone. With a crucial referendum set for December 14, 2023, local citizens are urging authorities to reconsider their plans.

Local protesters have organized press conferences every other day, with the next one scheduled for tomorrow at 12:00 PM. The atmosphere remains tense, as over 100 people have committed to a continuous presence in the industrial area, standing guard around the clock. “We are here day and night, taking shifts to ensure our voices are heard,” said resident Boško Kažić.

Kažić expressed frustration about the situation, stating, “Instead of spending time with our children and grandchildren, we have to stand guard here.” He emphasized the emotional toll of the protests, especially during the festive season when families typically celebrate together.

Residents are determined to oppose the plant’s construction, asserting that the facility should be built in the city of Podgorica, not in their community. As protests continue, Botun locals have called for all eligible Zećani voters to participate in the upcoming referendum, aiming to reject the wastewater treatment plant’s construction.

The protests began on September 9, following the approval from the Agency for Environmental Protection. With the City of Podgorica prioritizing the construction, residents are increasingly worried about the environmental impact on their community.

Local leaders have urged officials to engage in discussions to find a more suitable location for the facility. “We want to negotiate a better solution for everyone. This is a matter of our health and future,” Kažić added.

As the referendum date approaches, tensions are likely to rise further. The local community is prepared for more significant actions should their demands not be met. “We will gather quickly if needed, and we will not let this happen without a fight,” Kažić warned.

The upcoming days are critical as Botun residents prepare for a decisive moment in their struggle against the wastewater treatment plant. Stay tuned for more updates as this urgent story develops.
