UPDATE: Major UK supermarkets including Aldi, Lidl, and Marks & Spencer will close all their North East stores for 24 hours on Boxing Day, December 26, 2023. This decision comes as part of an effort to give staff a well-deserved break during the busy festive season.
In contrast, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Asda will remain open but with reduced hours, ready to cater to post-Christmas bargain hunters. As shoppers prepare to hit the stores for holiday deals and essential supplies, it’s crucial to be aware of which retailers will be operational.
Tesco will open from 9 AM to 6 PM on Boxing Day, with Express locations extending their hours until 7 PM. According to Insider Media, store hours may vary by location, so customers are encouraged to check ahead.
Sainsbury’s stores will also welcome customers from 9 AM to 6 PM, while their Local branches will operate until 9 PM. A warning on their official website emphasizes that opening times can differ between stores.
In sharp contrast, Aldi has confirmed that all its outlets will be closed on Boxing Day, allowing employees to enjoy the holiday with their families. Rebecca Heley, Communications Director at Aldi UK, stated, “Christmas is a special time, and we want to ensure all of our colleagues have the opportunity to relax and enjoy it with their loved ones.”
Similarly, Lidl will not open any of its branches on Boxing Day. A representative highlighted that while most stores will remain closed, customers should verify local hours through the Lidl Plus app.
On the other hand, Asda will operate from 9 AM to 6 PM, ready to serve customers eager for deals. Meanwhile, Co-op stores will resume trading from 10 AM to 7 PM, with smaller convenience outlets opening earlier at 9 AM.
Waitrose has decided against opening its primary locations, although some Welcome Break and Shell-affiliated sites may still serve customers.
Finally, Marks and Spencer confirmed it will close all its locations on Boxing Day. Jayne Wall, operations director for M&S, expressed gratitude for the hardworking colleagues who make their stores inviting for shoppers, stating, “Like most retailers, we always have some colleagues in our stores and depots on Boxing Day to help reset.”
As Morrisons is expected to follow last year’s schedule, their stores in England and Wales will likely open from 9 AM to 6 PM, with Scottish branches operating from approximately 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM.
This year’s Boxing Day is shaping up to be quite different, with major retailers prioritizing employee rest while others cater to the needs of eager shoppers. Remember to plan your shopping trips accordingly!
