Visitor guidelines at hospitals in the greater Glasgow area have tightened as NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) reports a significant rise in flu cases. Hospital officials are urging all visitors and clinical staff to wear Fluid Resistant Surgical Masks while on hospital premises to help mitigate the spread of the virus and protect vulnerable patients.
The request for mask-wearing follows advice from the Infection Prevention and Control Teams within NHSGGC. The health board is taking proactive measures to manage the increased patient volume presenting with flu-like symptoms. Professor Angela Wallace, Executive Director of Nursing at NHSGGC, emphasized the importance of these measures: “Flu season is here, and we want to ensure that you, your loved ones, and those who are the most vulnerable stay protected.” She added that wearing a mask, along with other recommended precautions, is crucial in reducing virus transmission.
In addition to mask requirements, the health authority is promoting vaccination as the most effective way to protect against flu. Eligible individuals will receive invitations for the vaccine, and NHSGGC encourages everyone to attend their appointments. For those who may have missed their scheduled vaccinations, community pharmacies are offering the flu vaccine, and mobile vaccination clinics are available throughout the health board area for drop-in visits without appointments.
Those exhibiting mild to moderate flu symptoms are advised not to visit Accident & Emergency departments or hospitals. Instead, NHSGGC recommends several guidelines to manage symptoms safely at home:
– Consider your need to go out. Utilize online self-help guides available on NHS Inform or through the NHS 24 app.
– Seek assistance locally. If medical advice is necessary, contact your GP surgery or visit a community pharmacist for a consultation.
– Call NHS 24 at 111 for urgent healthcare needs outside of regular hours. The service is available 24 hours a day to provide guidance or arrange appointments.
NHSGGC continues to monitor the situation and is committed to ensuring the safety of patients and staff. For further information on flu vaccinations, visit the NHSGGC Winter Vaccination Programme 2025/26 webpage.
