UPDATE: A 38-year-old woman, Amanda Johnson, has been sentenced for a shocking campaign of stalking and assault against her ex-husband following their separation. The case unfolded at Hull Crown Court where the judge described her behavior as “appalling” and “awful.”
Johnson’s relentless harassment included a barrage of abusive text messages, threats, and even physical violence. This disturbing saga began on September 1, 2022, and continued until April 29, 2023. Prosecutor Oliver Shipley revealed that Johnson’s conduct escalated after her marriage, which ended last year when her husband left due to her behavior.
In court, it was revealed that Johnson bombarded her ex with a “torrent of abuse,” making him endure daily messages filled with name-calling and threats. She even drove slowly past his new girlfriend’s home while shouting slurs. The psychological toll on her former husband was considerable, leading to “distress” from the constant harassment.
Johnson’s outbursts included punching him unexpectedly during an encounter on March 8. Reports indicate she had attempted to make her ex jealous through sarcastic messaging, sending a staggering 67 abusive texts and 25 missed calls in a single instance. Despite her ex’s attempts to move on, Johnson’s behavior only intensified.
The court heard that after the separation, Johnson’s actions included putting her ex-husband’s belongings outside their home and verbally assaulting him over the phone. In one striking moment, she posted on social media, labeling him “cheating, lying scum of the earth.”
Judge Gurdial Singh condemned Johnson’s actions, stating, “You lost all self-control of yourself and that loss of self-control led to criminal behavior.” He emphasized there was no justification for her actions, despite her emotional distress over the separation.
Johnson was handed a five-year restraining order and ordered to complete 12 days of rehabilitation. She was also required to pay £200 in costs. The judge remarked that her behavior spiraled out of control as she struggled to accept the end of the relationship.
This case highlights the urgent need for awareness around domestic abuse and the lasting impacts of emotional trauma. The community in Beverley is left reeling from these revelations as authorities continue to address such serious issues in domestic relations.
As Johnson begins her rehabilitation, the case serves as a reminder of the dangers of unresolved emotional conflict and the importance of adhering to restraining orders for the safety of all involved.
