BREAKING: TIFF: The Market has just announced it is inviting over 250 additional international buyers to its inaugural event, enhancing opportunities for global film distribution. This exciting development is part of a significant USD $16.9 million (C$23 million) investment from the Canadian federal government, in collaboration with Telefilm Canada.
The inaugural market will run from September 10-20, 2026, just before the festival kicks off, providing a unique platform for sellers to engage with a curated public audience. Over 650 market screening slots will be available at premier venues, including TIFF Lightbox and Scotiabank, allowing for critical audience feedback.
Cameron Bailey, CEO of TIFF, emphasized the importance of aligning the market with the festival, stating, “As the largest public film festival in the world, there is no better place than TIFF to get a pulse on what is resonating with audiences.” This partnership is poised to create a vibrant exchange between buyers and distributors, fostering connections that could define future projects.
The market will host its hub at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, located a short walk from TIFF Lightbox. This venue will feature 120 exhibitor spaces, multiple programming stages, business lounges, and even an innovation zone. Sales suites will be available at nearby hotels, including the InterContinental Toronto Centre and The Ritz-Carlton, enhancing accessibility for international participants.
Industry experts have expressed cautious optimism about the timing of the market, which follows the summer holiday period. While some attendees at the recent AFM in Los Angeles voiced concerns about potential challenges, many welcomed the opportunity for an additional sales forum.
The market will also include a seven-day speaker summit, showcasing innovative projects across AI, XR, and immersive content. A project market aimed at supporting co-production and an IP showcase for prospective producers and financiers will further enrich the experience for attendees.
Charles Tremblay, recently appointed head of TIFF: The Market, highlighted the strong support from key stakeholders, including major film agencies and international buyers, underscoring the market’s relevance in today’s evolving film landscape.
As this event draws closer, the excitement within the industry continues to build. Buyers, distributors, and filmmakers alike are eager to see how this market can reshape the future of film distribution.
