Dr. Andrew Fish, co-founder of the FM Dental & Implant Centre, recently spoke about his commitment to providing “advanced, ethical” dental care. His insights came during a lecture in Singapore, where he discussed the importance of high clinical standards in dentistry, particularly in oral surgery and implantology.
Fish’s journey into dentistry began with a personal story. He recounted the impact of his mother’s battle with osteomyelitis, which resulted in the loss of half her lower jaw. A professor in Glasgow successfully rebuilt it using titanium, which profoundly influenced Fish’s career choice. “Seeing how that completely changed her life set me on this career path,” he explained.
Growing up in a single-parent household in Manchester, Fish was inspired by the surgeons who transformed his mother’s life. He pursued his education in dentistry at the University of Glasgow, where he later returned to complete competitive training at the Edinburgh Dental Institute. His experience includes working with oral and maxillofacial surgery teams across Scotland and England, culminating in a Postgraduate Certificate in Implantology from the University of Salford.
After relocating to Jersey nine years ago, Fish joined the practice of Dr Jane Bracken and has seen a steady increase in demand for his services. His clinical philosophy centers on responsibility, predictability, and long-term outcomes. He stated, “I place a lot of implants, and every one is guided by the same principles.”
Fish proudly emphasizes a commitment to evidence-based practices in his work. Notably, he has not prescribed antibiotics for implant surgery in over eight years, citing the effectiveness of proper protocols and synthetic grafting materials. “With the right materials and setup, you simply don’t need them,” he said. This approach not only protects patients but also addresses concerns about antibiotic overprescription in healthcare.
His use of synthetic grafts allows for true bone regeneration without ethical concerns linked to animal or cadaver grafts. Fish has presented his innovative protocols internationally, showcasing their effectiveness. He also utilizes CBCT scans selectively, ensuring that patients receive only necessary imaging to minimize radiation exposure.
As travel for dental care becomes increasingly common, Fish acknowledges the need for affordable options. He stated, “Some people genuinely need more affordable options, I completely get that.” He offers support to patients who may experience complications after seeking cheaper treatments abroad. “We always offer interim support for them without directly involving ourselves in their treatment. We are just here to help with acute issues,” he noted.
Fish also pointed out that when all costs are factored in, such as travel and potential repairs, the expense of treatment abroad may not differ significantly from that offered in Jersey. “In fact, sometimes we are even less,” he remarked, highlighting that Jersey often provides competitive pricing compared to the UK.
Despite his international recognition as a lecturer, Fish expressed a desire to raise awareness of the high-quality dental care available locally. “My work is recognized widely overseas because of my lecturing, but less so here at home,” he said with a smile. “That’s why I’m passionate about letting Islanders know that advanced, ethical, and affordable dentistry is available right here in Jersey and that they don’t need to get on a plane to find it.”
Through his efforts, Andrew Fish continues to reshape perceptions of dentistry, emphasizing the importance of ethical practices and high standards in patient care.
