UPDATE: A massive 330-mile snow wall is set to sweep across the UK this weekend, bringing severe winter conditions as heavy rain batters the South West. Forecasts from WXCharts, using Met Desk data, indicate that temperatures will plunge below freezing as early as Friday, December 5, 2023, with snow beginning to fall near Aberystwyth, Wales around 3 PM.
This snow band is expected to extend all the way to Aviemore, Scotland by 6 PM that evening. Weather experts warn that some areas could see accumulations of up to 5 inches of snow, particularly in northern Welsh regions, while 1 inch may settle in scattered areas throughout Scotland. The Met Office has issued urgent warnings for persistent wet spells leading into Friday, with the worst conditions hitting Southern England, the West Midlands, the North West, and Wales.
Conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly, impacting millions of Britons. Northern Ireland and southwestern Scotland are also forecasted to experience similar harsh weather. The Met Office’s extended outlook reveals that unsettled conditions will persist, with further showers and heavy rain affecting much of the country. They predict that a frontal zone will move eastward on Saturday, potentially bringing locally heavy rain, particularly to hills exposed to strong southerly winds.
Forecasters warn: “It’s possible we could then see yet more organized, locally heavy rain move across most areas on Monday.” Although temperatures are expected to hover around average, the combination of wet and breezy conditions will make it feel significantly chillier. Fortunately, widespread frost or fog is unlikely during this unsettled spell.
As we approach Christmas, there’s also a chance of hill snow in northern regions between December 16 and 30. However, the Met Office predicts that temperatures will likely remain near or slightly above average, although colder spells are possible, especially if prolonged settled conditions develop.
Residents are urged to prepare for severe winter weather as conditions worsen. Stay tuned for updates as this situation develops.
