A motorist has been handed a suspended jail sentence after being caught driving under the influence on the M2 motorway in Northern Ireland. Marian Vasile, a 26-year-old resident of Kilburn Street in Belfast, was detected exceeding the legal alcohol limit on November 2, 2023.
During the incident, Vasile recorded a breath alcohol level of 47 micrograms per litre, significantly above the legal limit of 35 micrograms. This violation occurred in a 70 mph zone on the M2 motorway near Antrim.
In court proceedings held at Antrim Magistrates Court in Ballymena on November 25, the defendant utilized the services of a Romanian language interpreter to assist with the proceedings. Vasile expressed remorse, stating he was unaware that he had exceeded the legal limit.
Judicial Response to the Offence
District Judge Nigel Broderick described the situation as a “serious offence,” emphasizing the risks associated with driving under the influence, especially on a motorway. The court noted Vasile’s previously clean driving record, which was taken into consideration during sentencing.
Ultimately, Vasile pleaded guilty to the charges against him. As a result, he received a three-month jail term, which has been suspended for a period of 15 months. Additionally, he has been banned from driving for the same duration and imposed with a fine of £100.
This case underscores the ongoing issues surrounding road safety and the enforcement of drink-driving laws in Northern Ireland. Authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to curb impaired driving, aiming to prevent further incidents that could pose a threat to public safety.
