UPDATE: The PSNI has just launched a major operation to enhance safety during the bustling Christmas period in Northern Ireland. Starting now, undercover police will be deployed to nightlife hotspots as part of “Operation Season’s Greetings,” aimed at curbing crime and ensuring public safety.
This annual initiative, unveiled on Monday, implements increased police visibility in key areas such as busy shopping districts, nightlife venues, and public transport hubs. With the holiday season known for heightened activity, this operation is critical to deter crime and protect the community.
Included in this operation is Project Vigilant, which will see plain-clothed officers working alongside uniformed personnel to identify and address predatory behaviors in nightlife areas. Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson emphasized the importance of this project in combatting violence against women and girls.
“By recognizing signs like unwanted attention or someone being followed, we can intervene before harm occurs,” Henderson stated. He also highlighted the surge in domestic abuse reports during the festive season, urging victims to seek help. “Our message is simple: we are here for you. Call us on 101, report online, or dial 999 in an emergency.”
The operation focuses on several key areas: public safety, road safety, and tackling violence, all while preventing thefts and antisocial behavior. “Christmas is a time for family, friends, and community,” Henderson noted, assuring citizens that officers will be out in full force to maintain safety and provide reassurance to shoppers and those enjoying festive nights out.
The PSNI is collaborating closely with partners like Retail NI and Translink through the Business Crime Partnership, which aims to create safer commercial environments. Ian Campbell, Director of Service Operations at Translink, welcomed the initiative and stressed the return of late-night bus and rail services. “Safety remains our top priority,” he said, encouraging customers to plan their travel accordingly.
Glyn Roberts, Chief Executive of Retail NI, reinforced the need for cooperation between police and retailers to combat shoplifting and other crimes during this busy season. “Christmas is a challenging but enjoyable time for retailers, and it’s crucial we work together to keep people safe,” he remarked.
Belfast Lord Mayor, Councillor Tracy Kelly, expressed her support for the initiative, stating, “I want everyone across Belfast to enjoy a safe, welcoming, and joyful Christmas.” She acknowledged the critical role that the combined efforts of the PSNI, businesses, and community organizations will play in maintaining safety throughout the festive season.
As the festive season unfolds, the PSNI’s proactive approach is set to significantly impact public safety. Citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant, secure their homes, and plan their outings responsibly. With a robust police presence and community cooperation, Northern Ireland aims to ensure a joyous and safe holiday experience for all.
