BREAKING: West Derby’s rising pop sensation, XO, has just signed with record label Polydor, catapulting them into the spotlight and igniting excitement among fans. The group, consisting of Summer Askew, Shali Bordoni, Zoë Miller, Emmy Statham, and Reanna Sujeewon, has quickly become a household name, following a whirlwind year since their formation.
With their debut EP, ‘Fashionably Late’, releasing on November 14, 2023, XO is already creating waves in the music scene. The band has garnered significant attention from major platforms like Radio 1 and BBC Introducing, and their sold-out headline tour is proof of their skyrocketing popularity.
Summer Askew, 20, from West Derby, expressed her disbelief at the band’s rapid success. “We were so excited,” she shared, reflecting on the overwhelming response from fans during their recent tour. “We didn’t expect them to actually buy tickets.” The band’s energetic performances resonated particularly with younger audiences, and they are embracing their newfound fame with enthusiasm.
Despite the challenges of being a new group, XO has chosen to focus on their accomplishments rather than uncertainties. “We didn’t really speak that into existence,” Summer noted about the doubts some may have had regarding ticket sales. “Selling out was a shock to us all. It was our first tour, and we only had two songs out.”
The vibrant atmosphere of Liverpool has also left a lasting impression on the band. Summer recounted how her fellow members fell in love with the city’s lively spirit during their visit for BBC ONE’s Big Weekender. “Everyone’s just so happy and friendly and lively and up for a party,” she remarked, highlighting the city’s charm.
XO’s EP showcases a blend of pop and noughties R&B influences, with standout tracks that reflect their unique style. One notable inclusion is ‘Dead Chat’, a humorous voice note featuring the group discussing a suitor’s poor flirting skills. “We wanted to include those little voice notes because people always say our personalities are what make us,” Summer explained.
The public’s reaction to the EP has been overwhelmingly positive, surprising the band. “We’ve all been taken by surprise,” she said. “To have two singles out, a soft launch with ‘Ponytail,’ and now a whole EP and a headline tour is just crazy in the space of a year.”
As XO continues to rise, they maintain a close-knit bond, celebrating milestones together. “After our final show, we all sat together and had a little bit of a party in the hotel lobby,” Summer shared, emphasizing the importance of cherishing these moments amidst their busy schedule.
Fans can expect more from XO as they build on their momentum and make their mark in the music industry. With their infectious energy and relatable personalities, XO is set to become a defining act for a new generation of pop enthusiasts. Keep an eye out for more developments as this exciting journey unfolds!
