Science Journalists Invited to Pitch Ideas in Quantum Competition

In an exciting initiative to celebrate the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, the 2025 World Conference of Science Journalists (WCSJ) in Pretoria, South Africa will host a new competition for science writers. Physics World and Physics Magazine have announced the launch of the Quantum Pitch Competition, aimed at encouraging journalists to explore and present innovative story ideas related to quantum science and technology.

Details of the Quantum Pitch Competition

Attendees of the WCSJ are invited to submit their pitches, which can cover various aspects of quantum science, including materials, computing, sensing, and the individuals driving advancements in the field. Both publications are particularly interested in proposals that feature interviews with physicists or profiles of professionals in academia and industry.

Participants are encouraged to present their ideas in a concise pitch of 150–300 words, accompanied by a brief biography and samples of previous work, if available. The submission deadline is set for December 8, 2025, with entries to be sent to [email protected] with the subject line “2025WCSJ Quantum Pitch.” The editors from both Physics World and Physics Magazine will review all entries and announce the selected pitches post-conference.

Encouraging Diverse Storytelling Formats

The competition welcomes a variety of storytelling formats, including news articles, podcasts, visual media, and other creative approaches that can effectively convey the complexities of quantum science to a broad audience. This initiative not only aims to highlight emerging voices in science journalism but also to enhance public understanding of quantum topics.

This contest is part of a larger effort by Physics World to contribute to the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, which seeks to raise awareness globally about the significance of quantum physics and its applications. As the year progresses, readers can look forward to additional coverage and insights from Physics World and its international partners.
