Energy specialists warn that UK households could be losing up to £630 annually due to power-hungry devices left on standby. Research indicates that many households are unaware of the costs associated with these so-called “phantom loads.” With energy prices remaining high, experts emphasize the importance of unplugging unused appliances to cut costs.
According to Helen Rolph, an energy savings expert at Quotezone, nearly six in ten individuals still leave their appliances in standby mode. She noted, “It’s worrying that so many people are unaware of how much money they could save by simply turning off devices.” The research conducted by Quotezone highlights that one-third of UK residents do not recognize the financial impact of standby energy consumption.
Rolph further elaborated on the issue, stating, “From larger appliances, such as extra fridges in garages, to smaller devices like towel rails that often remain switched on, all contribute to increased energy costs.” As households prepare for rising energy bills, she suggests that this Halloween could serve as a timely reminder to address phantom loads.
The energy price cap has already increased by £35 this month, resulting in elevated energy costs. Reducing standby power usage could help mitigate these expenses, potentially leading to meaningful savings over time. Over a third (34%) of UK respondents remain unaware that they could be losing more than £100 annually to these “vampire appliances.”
Top Ten Phantom Load Offenders
Energy specialists have identified the top ten appliances that contribute most significantly to standby costs:
1. Faulty set-top box recorders: £162 per year
2. Outdoor lights: £135 annually
3. Additional fridges: £104 per year
4. Desktop computers: £86 annually
5. Electric towel rail: £62 per year

7. Multi-room speakers: £30 per year
8. Router: £8.13 per year

By being more mindful of these devices, households can take immediate actions to reduce their energy costs. Unplugging appliances that are not in use is one of the simplest and most effective strategies to combat rising energy bills. As families seek ways to manage their finances better, awareness of phantom loads presents an opportunity for significant savings.
