Owner Arrested After Beloved Dog Arnie Found Dead in Ute

URGENT UPDATE: A shocking twist unfolds in the tragic case of Arnie, a German Shepherd found dead in a vehicle ten days after being reported stolen. Authorities confirm that Arnie’s owner, Nathan McKeown, has been arrested following revelations that the vehicle was never stolen.

The beloved family dog was reportedly taken during a car theft outside a home in Wynnum, Brisbane, between 1:30 AM and 5:00 AM on November 8, 2025. A frantic search ensued, with McKeown and his partner, Louise McKeown, launching a viral campaign and offering a $6,000 reward for Arnie’s safe return.

On November 17, the heartbreaking search came to a devastating end when Arnie was discovered dead inside the ute parked on Amelia Street in Fortitude Valley, a popular nightlife area. Initial reports celebrated the search effort, but recent police inquiries have drastically altered the narrative.

Queensland Police announced that they will allege the vehicle was not stolen, asserting that McKeown left Arnie inside the ute before abandoning it. A spokesperson stated, “It will be alleged shortly after 10:30 PM on November 7, the male owner drove the vehicle into Amelia Street in Fortitude Valley and left the vehicle on foot.”

In a stunning legal development, McKeown has been charged with one count of breach of duty of care of an animal under the Animal Protection Act. He is expected to appear in a Brisbane court next month.

Following the revelations, a Facebook page dedicated to finding Arnie was deleted, leaving the community in shock. The McKeown family had described Arnie as an integral part of their lives, with Louise famously stating, “He knew I was pregnant before I did.”

The couple spent countless hours searching for their dog, even hiring a pet detective and appealing to the community for help. “Please just return our dog, you can keep the ute, we don’t need the ute, we just want our pet back,” McKeown pleaded during the search.

Authorities are now focusing on the circumstances surrounding Arnie’s death. Police are reviewing CCTV footage and following leads as the investigation continues. A spokesperson for Queensland Police remarked, “The public is thanked for their extensive assistance throughout the investigation.”

This tragic case has captured the attention of the nation, with many expressing outrage and sorrow over the loss of Arnie. The Queensland Police Service has urged the public to be respectful as the matter progresses through the courts, emphasizing their commitment to animal care.

As developments unfold, the McKeown family is left mourning the loss of their beloved companion, who they described as a “big friendly giant.” The community awaits further updates on this distressing case, highlighting the urgent need for justice for Arnie.
