St Issell’s WI Hosts Special Meeting, Confirms President’s Role

St Issell’s Women’s Institute (WI) in Saundersfoot convened a special meeting on November 13, 2023, during which members confirmed the continuation of Diane Rigden as president. The gathering began with the singing of the hymn “Jerusalem,” setting a welcoming tone for the evening.

Members expressed gratitude to Mary Lawrence and Bev Bennet for providing flowers for the top table. The meeting also acknowledged several members celebrating birthdays in November, including Sue Haines, Sue Gould, Anne-Marie Littlewood, Liz Talboys, and Mary Cavell. Sympathy was conveyed to Mary Sefton, who recently lost her husband, with a card and flowers sent on behalf of the group.

In terms of activities, Madelene was thanked for leading a successful walk on November 10, where six participants managed to avoid rain showers. The attendees confirmed their £10 deposits for the Christmas lunch scheduled at Bramleys on December 4. Final arrangements were also made for members attending the Annual Meeting in Haverfordwest on Saturday.

Upcoming Events and Community Engagement

A carol service is planned for December 10 at 14:00 at St Issell’s Church. Members were encouraged to contribute mince pies, with several volunteers stepping forward. Bee agreed to serve as the organist, while Val is coordinating with Rev’d Martine Johnson to finalize details.

During the meeting, Pam presented wool intended for scarves to be made for the Eisteddfod. Several members expressed interest in forming a knitting group, with a date yet to be determined. Anne-Marie committed to completing a scarf by the next meeting.

In addition, Bev announced that a speaker has been arranged for the December meeting, which will conclude with a festive Christmas buffet. Members are asked to bring five Christmas cards to the next meeting for distribution to local residential homes.

Diane reviewed the newsletter, noting a lack of interest in WI house windows. Pam also mentioned the trip to Cardiff scheduled for November 20. A discussion on sports and leisure revealed a general consensus that more sporting activities are needed within the organization.

The meeting included a competition for a motto for 2026, won by Jacqui Cowgill with her phrase: “If you can’t do it, don’t do it, but if you can do it, then do it.” The evening concluded with refreshments and the Annual General Meeting, cementing Diane Rigden’s role as president for the upcoming term.

The commitment to community engagement and member involvement continues to be a hallmark of St Issell’s WI, as they look forward to a busy December filled with events that foster both fellowship and service.
