Holidaymakers Make Snap Judgements on Vacation Rentals

New research has revealed that over a quarter of holidaymakers form opinions about vacation rentals in less than 10 seconds. A survey conducted by OnePoll.com, involving 2,000 travellers, highlights how crucial decor choices impact the appeal of potential holiday homes.

Among the primary turn-offs identified were kitchens with chipped cabinet doors, beaded curtains, and fridge doors adorned with magnets. Such features can swiftly deter guests. In the realm of bedrooms, 52% of respondents noted that the presence of dolls or mannequins would significantly influence their decision to rent a property. Furthermore, furry toilet seat covers were deemed an absolute deal-breaker in bathrooms.

The survey also indicated that 43% of holidaymakers believe they can decide on the attractiveness of accommodation faster than it takes to boil a kettle. This rapid assessment extends to outdoor spaces, where 61% of participants expressed that messy gardens would be a major drawback. A lack of greenery or an abundance of concrete deterred 41%, while 38% were put off by excessive artificial plants.

On a more positive note, stylish outdoor dining areas captured the attention of 52% of those surveyed, while 37% would be inclined to choose properties featuring hot tubs.

Inside the home, decor choices are equally significant. Potential guests are likely to be turned off by taxidermy or animal heads, with 40% expressing distaste for such items. Additionally, 32% of respondents indicated that carpets with 1980s floral patterns would negatively impact their impression of a rental.

The research found that nearly two-thirds of those surveyed (63%) have never considered renting out their properties, as they believe their homes are not “renter ready.” Moreover, 22% admitted to feeling ashamed of their home decor.

Amy Durn, an interior design partner for Booking.com, which commissioned the study, noted that transforming a space into a desirable rental does not necessitate a full renovation. She stated, “A few intentional design choices can completely change how a space feels and photographs.” Durn emphasized the importance of first impressions, remarking that guests form opinions within seconds.

Small styling upgrades can have a more significant impact on bookings than extensive, costly renovations. Durn advised homeowners to aim for a presentation that feels cared for, cohesive, and inviting.

The survey also highlighted specific decor elements that are likely to deter potential guests. Items such as excessive knick-knacks, heavy drapes, and glittery cushions were among the top turn-offs. In addition, wall decals with phrases like “Live, laugh, love” were also considered off-putting by many respondents.
