British Man Dies After Dental and Hair Procedures in Turkey

Relatives of a British man, Mentor Rama, are mourning his death following dental treatment and a hair transplant in Istanbul. The 36-year-old had traveled to Turkey for these procedures last week but began to feel unwell after returning to his hotel room. Emergency services were called, and Rama was transferred to a local hospital, where he died on November 11, 2023.

Following his death, Rama’s remains were moved to the Council of Forensic Medicine in Istanbul. Turkish authorities have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his passing. A spokesperson from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) confirmed they are supporting Rama’s family and are in contact with local authorities regarding the situation.

Tributes Pour In for the Deceased

A heartfelt tribute on a relative’s public Facebook page expressed deep sorrow: “Your departure has left a void that nothing in this world can fill.” The message, translated from Albanian, highlighted Rama’s role as a source of light and strength, emphasizing the profound grief felt by his loved ones. It poignantly stated, “I will miss you every day of my life.”

In the wake of his passing, Turkish media reported that Rama’s remains have been returned to his family and transported back to the UK.

Concerns Over Medical Tourism in Turkey

Turkey has become a leading destination for British citizens seeking affordable cosmetic procedures, often referred to as “medical tourism.” While many patients are drawn to the country for significantly lower rates—often 40 to 60 percent cheaper than similar treatments in the UK—the risks associated with such procedures have raised alarms.

From March 2019 to March 2024, at least 28 British citizens have reportedly died in Turkey due to complications from elective treatments. Numerous dental professionals have advised caution, warning that patients seeking procedures such as the popular “Turkey teeth” treatments might face serious health risks.

As the investigation into Mentor Rama’s death continues, his family and friends are left grappling with the loss of a beloved figure, while the broader conversation around medical tourism and its potential dangers remains urgent and unresolved.
