Montenegro’s national football team secured a significant victory against Gibraltar, triumphing 2-1 in their latest FIFA World Cup Qualifier match. This win marks Montenegro’s third success in the qualification series, reinforcing their aspirations for a spot in the upcoming tournament.
The match, held on March 15, 2024, showcased Montenegro’s resilience as they overcame an early setback. Nikola Krstović, who scored from the penalty spot, emphasized the need for better playing conditions. “The surface was challenging; it’s not comparable to the artificial pitches we have in Montenegro. I firmly believe that football should not be played on such terrain,” he stated.
In the first twenty minutes, Montenegro struggled to find their rhythm, but as the game progressed, they took control. “We could have scored more, but we lacked the finishing touch. Nonetheless, we achieved what we set out to do,” Krstović added. He expressed hope that the younger players would continue to build confidence as they work towards creating a winning mentality. “We will surprise everyone and achieve something significant in the future,” he promised in an interview with TVCG.
Vasilije Adžić also made headlines with his performance, scoring the equalizer for Montenegro with a stunning free kick. “This goal means a lot for my confidence, and I’m glad to have helped the team. We are significantly better than Gibraltar, and we should have closed the game earlier given our chances,” said Adžić, who plays for Juventus.
Andrija Bulatović, who played the entire match, noted the team’s strong start despite a shaky moment when they conceded an unexpected goal. “We imposed our rhythm from the beginning, and even after the setback, we quickly regrouped. We earned this victory,” he explained, highlighting the team’s potential to shine in upcoming matches.
The match also marked a special moment for talented player Sead Kolašinac, who had the opportunity to play alongside his childhood idol, Adam Marušić. “It was an incredible feeling. Adam has been my idol since I started playing football. I’m grateful he was captain tonight, and I’m proud that we younger players contributed to this important win,” Bulatović reflected.
The victory against Gibraltar not only boosts Montenegro’s confidence but also sets the stage for their future matches in the qualification campaign. With young talent and a strong team spirit, Montenegro aims to establish itself as a formidable contender in international football.
