Ceremonies marking the liberation of Cetinje took place on November 13, 2023, with wreaths laid at the Memorial Ossuary. Key figures present included the Mayor of Cetinje, Nikola Đurašković, the President of the City Assembly, Milena Vujović, and Borislav Pravilović, President of the Association of Fighters of the People’s Liberation War and Antifascists of Cetinje.
During the proceedings, Mayor Đurašković emphasized the significance of this date, describing it as a moment that unites the city’s memory, pride, and commitment to future generations. He remarked, “Our city has been home to fighters and intellectuals, poets and patriots—people who, in their unique ways, served the same idea: that Montenegro be a land of free, defiant, and proud individuals.”
The mayor highlighted the resilience of Cetinje’s citizens during World War II, noting their unwavering support for the liberation movement. “They stood side by side, determined to defend honor and humanity in the face of darkness and violence,” he stated.
However, he expressed concern over contemporary efforts to distort history, mentioning the rise of monuments dedicated to those who have served foreign interests and undermined ideals of freedom. He reaffirmed Cetinje’s loyalty to its roots, antifascism, and the values that have defined Montenegrin identity throughout the ages.
In a gesture of respect for the city’s storied past, the city plans to honor the battles at Košćela and commemorate 49 national heroes with new monuments. “This will serve as a lasting reminder of the struggle for freedom and antifascism, and the brave individuals who affirmed these ideals through their actions,” Đurašković concluded.
Pravilović also addressed the gathering, reflecting on the legacy of the heroes from Cetinje and the significance of the People’s Hero Order. “Today, as we remember the glorious days of liberation, we do not merely pay tribute to the past; we affirm our faith in the values that have sustained us: freedom, justice, solidarity, and human dignity,” he said.
He urged the community to uphold these values, especially in times when courage and understanding are needed more than ever. “Cetinje has shown throughout history that while we may fall, we never give up or surrender. Thus, as we celebrate Liberation Day, we also honor the spirit of Cetinje—an enduring flame that unites us, compels us to build a better, fairer, and more dignified society,” Pravilović added.
In memory of fallen patriots, a wreath was also laid at the grave of the Unknown Soldier near the Vlaška Church, reinforcing the commitment to remember those who sacrificed for freedom.
