BREAKING: A mother and her six-year-old son narrowly escaped a devastating car fire on the A63 in Yorkshire, with the incident occurring at approximately 9 AM on October 20, 2023. Reanne Wilson, 27, from Scunthorpe, described the harrowing moment that transformed a routine commute into a life-threatening emergency.
As flames erupted from the bonnet of her Subaru, passing motorists alerted Reanne, who was initially unaware of the danger. “I noticed a passenger pointing out of his car window, and as I leaned forward, I saw flames coming from the corner of the front bonnet,” Reanne recounted. “My heart began to race, and it felt as though life had frozen.”
In a panic, Reanne slammed on the brakes, but by that time, flames had engulfed the car. “If the driver hadn’t flagged me down, I would still be driving and not quite sure if my little boy and I would be here to tell the story,” she said.
With seconds to act, Reanne screamed for her son Lincoln to escape. “My first words were to Lincoln, ‘Get out of the car and run,'” she recalled. Despite her panic and a jammed driver’s door, she managed to free herself and her son just in time.
Reanne’s emotional turmoil did not end with their escape. “I still haven’t managed to get behind the wheel,” she admitted. “I often stick my earphones in when I’m in other people’s cars and pause the world out until my journey is complete.” Thankfully, Lincoln seems less affected, often telling his mother that he loves her “to infinity.”
The fire, which occurred near the Humber Bridge, disrupted traffic on the westbound carriageway, but no injuries were reported. West Yorkshire Fire Services promptly responded to the emergency, ensuring the area was safe.
Reanne expressed immense gratitude towards those who helped save her and her son. “Everyone has been so amazing,” she said, thanking the lady at the car compound who offered her support. “I simply cannot thank the people who attended enough, and I’ll be forever thankful that my son and I are still here.”
This shocking incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of life and the importance of quick-thinking individuals. As Reanne reflects on the experience, she emphasizes the value of life over material possessions, stating, “Items and materials can be replaced, but we can’t be.”
