UPDATE: A tragic accident in Melbourne’s Dandenong Creek has claimed the lives of a devoted mother and her young son. Fariba Hussainzada, aged 33, and her six-year-old son Farzad drowned after a desperate attempt to rescue him when he fell into the swollen creek around 3:45 PM on November 12, 2025.
The heart-wrenching incident occurred on Allan Street as the boy lost control of his scooter and plunged into the rain-swollen waters. Witnesses reported the creek had been overflowing due to heavy rainfall in recent days, creating dangerous conditions. Without hesitation, Hussainzada jumped into the creek to save her son, but both were swept away by the strong current.
Emergency services responded rapidly, but tragically, their attempts to revive the mother and son were unsuccessful. Their bodies were later recovered, leaving behind a devastated family, including Fariba’s husband, Hamid, and their two younger children, aged four and one.
A family friend spoke of Fariba’s unwavering dedication to her children, stating, “She would not leave her kids alone for a minute.” Her cousin, Saleha Hussainzada, described her as a devoted mother whose love for her family was “truly remarkable.”
Farzad was a student at Doveton College, just a short drive from the tragic scene. The principal, Deb Gibson, expressed condolences and announced that support services would be made available for students and staff during this distressing time.
Local community members expressed their shock and sorrow, with one witness stating, “It was gut-wrenching to watch emergency services desperately try to save them.” The Victorian Afghan Associations Network has also extended its support to the grieving family, emphasizing the tragedy’s impact on the entire community.
Local authorities, including Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams, have echoed the community’s grief, stating, “Our hearts go out to the family impacted and the local community who are grieving with them today.”
A report will be prepared for the coroner as investigations continue. The incident underscores the dangers posed by swollen waterways, prompting calls for community vigilance around water safety.
This heartbreaking story serves as a reminder of the profound love a mother has for her children, and the tragic cost of a quick decision in a moment of crisis. Community members are encouraged to offer their support and condolences to the Hussainzada family during this incredibly difficult time.
