Urgent Update: Man Set Friend on Fire Over Crack Pipe Dispute

UPDATE: In a shocking act of violence, Craig Dowding, 34, was sentenced to 10 years in prison after setting his friend Robert Eddington on fire during a drug-fueled altercation. The incident, deemed “gratuitous” and “extreme,” occurred at Eddington’s home on May 14, leading to severe injuries and a harrowing hospital stay.

According to prosecutors at Cardiff Crown Court, tensions erupted when Dowding became enraged after Eddington used his crack pipe. In a brutal attack, Dowding repeatedly punched Eddington before grabbing a butane gas canister. He pierced the canister with a knife, aimed it at Eddington’s lap, and set him ablaze with a lighter, causing burns to 6.5% of his body, including full thickness burns to his face and hands.

Eddington was rushed to Grange University Hospital in Cwmbran, where he faced the risk of severe complications. Despite his critical condition, he discharged himself against medical advice.

The violence escalated further when both men reunited on June 9 to watch a Wales football match at a mutual friend’s house. After consuming alcohol, Dowding became abusive again, throwing a knife at Eddington before striking him over the head with a large knife. Eddington was left with a 15 cm wound, bruises, and significant blood loss, ultimately requiring hospitalization once more.

Dowding pleaded guilty to two counts of wounding with intent and arson, with a troubling history of violence including previous convictions for assault and robbery. During the sentencing, Judge Paul Hobson emphasized the “agonizing” pain Eddington endured and highlighted the “terrifying” fear he experienced during both attacks.

Defense attorney Sophie Keegan described Dowding as a vulnerable individual battling mental health issues, but the judge categorized him as a dangerous offender. Dowding received a sentence of ten years, with an extended license period of five years.

This disturbing case raises serious concerns about the consequences of substance abuse and the dangers of volatile friendships. As the community grapples with the aftermath, officials urge those struggling with addiction to seek help and avoid situations that can lead to violence.
