UPDATE: The cancelled Halloween fireworks display in Dungannon may be rescheduled to light up the Christmas lights switch-on event on November 29. This exciting possibility emerged during a recent meeting of the Mid Ulster District Council, where officials are exploring options to make this festive celebration even more spectacular.
The Halloween fireworks, originally planned for October 24, were abruptly cancelled due to severe weather conditions posing health and safety risks. According to Sinn Féin councillor Dominic Molloy, the decision was made to protect the public from potential hazards, including flying debris. “Safety is our primary concern at these kinds of things,” Molloy stated, emphasizing the necessity of the cancellation.
However, local traders have rallied for a chance to incorporate fireworks into the upcoming Christmas festivities. At last Thursday’s Policy & Resources committee meeting, Molloy proposed the idea of utilizing the fireworks during the Christmas lights switch-on. His proposal was supported by fellow councillor Nuala McLernon and DUP councillor James Burton, who highlighted the joy this addition could bring to families and children attending the event.
The strategic director of Organisation Development, Strategy and Performance, Marissa Canavan, confirmed that the council is actively investigating the feasibility of the proposal. “The officer team is currently liaising with the fireworks company,” she noted, adding that updates are expected to be provided at the beginning of the week.
This potential rescheduling could enhance the festive spirit in Dungannon, creating a memorable experience for the community. With conversations ongoing, residents eagerly await confirmation of whether the dazzling display will indeed be part of the Christmas celebration.
As the council works to coordinate with the fireworks provider, excitement builds around the possibility of a stunning display illuminating the night sky, bringing joy and wonder to families during the holiday season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story!
