Saundersfoot Coffee Morning Marks 50 Years of Fundraising

A significant milestone was celebrated on November 9, 2023, when the Pembrokeshire Fundraising Group of Guide Dogs Cymru held a coffee morning at the Harbwr Bar in Saundersfoot. The event marked 50 years of dedicated fundraising efforts in the region, drawing a commendable turnout despite adverse weather conditions, including flooding the day prior. Attendees contributed nearly £900 to the cause, with additional donations still being accepted.

The coffee morning featured notable attendees, including Natalie De Maid, Regional Community Fundraising Manager for the Central Region, and Ruth Evans, Community Fundraising Manager for Wales. They were joined by guide dog Mobility Specialist Hari Hartnell and various guide dog teams, including Adge with guide dog Skip and John with guide dog Eddie. The presence of Maureen and Martin, who brought along their retired guide dog Merry and withdrawn guide dog Toffee, highlighted the personal connections fostered through the organization.

During the event, Natalie De Maid praised the group for their long-standing commitment to raising awareness and funds for guide dogs in Pembrokeshire. She acknowledged the hard work of the volunteers and community members who have supported the initiative for five decades.

Eva Rich, the Group Organiser, expressed gratitude to everyone who participated, especially given the challenging weather conditions. She also extended her thanks to Andy and the Harbwr Bar for hosting the event and for their generous donation of coffee. The success of the coffee morning was further boosted by a well-organized raffle, spearheaded by Helen Hedley, which featured prizes donated by local businesses. Many attendees left with valuable vouchers, adding to the community spirit of the occasion.

As the event came to a close, Eva Rich emphasized the importance of ongoing support for the charity. She recognized the essential role that guide dogs like Skip and Eddie play in the lives of their handlers, Adge and John, respectively. The contributions of volunteers, including those who manage collection boxes throughout the year, are crucial to sustaining the group’s fundraising efforts.

In her closing remarks, Rich raised a toast to the future, stating, “Here’s to the next 50 years of vital fundraising for this very worthwhile charity!” The continued dedication of the Pembrokeshire Fundraising Group promises to make a lasting impact in the lives of those who benefit from guide dog services.
