Princess Kate paid homage to the late Queen Elizabeth II during a touching outing at the Royal British Legion’s annual Festival of Remembrance on November 11, 2023. Accompanied by her eldest son, Prince George, the event took place at the historic Royal Albert Hall in London. This marked the first time the 12-year-old joined his mother for the poignant ceremony, which commemorates those who served and lost their lives during the Second World War.
Dressed in a black velvet gown designed by Alessandra Rich, Princess Kate, 43, chose to accessorize with pearl drop earrings that previously belonged to the late Queen. The elegant dress featured a distinctive white Peter Pan collar and puff sleeves, which gathered at her wrists. She completed her look with sheer tights and pointed-toe black stiletto heels, complemented by a small black clutch adorned with a gold Mulberry clasp. Simple yet elegant, she wore a silver chain around her neck with a diamond cross and a large ring on her finger.
As part of her ensemble, Princess Kate also displayed an HMS Glasgow Brooch and a handmade poppy pin crafted by Izzy Ager of Lock & Co., a recent graduate of The Royal School of Needlework. The poppy, symbolizing remembrance, was made from silk, glass, and other natural materials.
While the event was significant for Princess Kate and Prince George, it was noted that Prince William was absent due to travel complications. The Prince of Wales was returning from Belem, which presented limited flight options. His route was specifically chosen to ensure he would be present for the Remembrance Service at the Cenotaph the following day.
In his father’s absence, young Prince George wore a formal black suit and a striped tie, pinning a small red poppy to his lapel. He stood alongside his mother in the royal box, where they were joined by his grandparents, King Charles and Queen Camilla, as they observed the festival unfold below.
Significance of the Festival of Remembrance
The Festival of Remembrance serves as an annual commemoration of the conclusion of the Second World War in 1945, marking its 80th anniversary this year. Senior members of the royal family attended the event, which is organized by the Royal British Legion, to honor the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought in the war.
This year’s festival focused on “the resilience and strength of military children who have faced bereavement,” according to the BBC. Hosted by actress Hannah Waddingham, known for her role in the series “Ted Lasso,” the evening included a two-minute silence, as well as musical performances from prominent artists including Sir Rod Stewart, Sam Ryder, and Keala Settle. The Central Band of the RAF, The RAF Squadronaires, The King’s Colour Squadron, and The Band of HM Royal Marines also contributed to the night’s musical offerings.
The annual event not only serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during wartime but also highlights the ongoing impact on families, especially children, in the military community. Through shared remembrance, attendees reaffirm their collective gratitude for those who have served and continue to serve.
