UPDATE: New CCTV footage has just been released by West Midlands Police in an urgent bid to catch the killers responsible for a devastating firework arson attack that claimed the life of Tony Nicholls in Birmingham over eight years ago. The footage shows a group fleeing from the scene moments after an industrial-sized firework exploded in Nicholls’ home on November 2, 2017, leading to his tragic death five days later.
At approximately 11:20 PM, a group entered Nicholls’ residence and ignited a firework known as a Colossus Finale 600 Series, which contained around 200 tubes of explosives. The ensuing fire trapped Nicholls in an upstairs bedroom, and he succumbed to his injuries in the hospital due to severe burns and smoke inhalation.
Detective Superintendent Jim Munro from West Midlands Police’s homicide team stated, “The firework is industrial-sized and unusual. We still believe someone out there may have information about where it came from.” He emphasized the importance of the released images, noting that changing allegiances over time could lead to new information about the suspects.
Despite the previous arrests of five men and a woman on suspicion of murder, no charges have been filed. The police are now urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward. “If you have information about what happened, or who was responsible, get in touch,” Munro added. “It may be that you feel what you know is not significant, but it could be the piece of information we need to finally get justice for Tony.”
In a poignant statement, Nicholls’ daughter, Fiona Nicholls, expressed her ongoing anguish, stating, “The last eight years have been hell. I relive it every day. Every bonfire night, I’m anxious. It just brings back trauma.” She implored anyone with information to do the right thing and help bring justice for her father.
