Morris Lubricants Backs Shrewsbury Men’s Shed with Donations

Morris Lubricants has pledged support to the Shrewsbury Men’s Shed, committing to a monthly donation for the next two years. The announcement came after a visit from the company’s executive chairman, Andrew Goddard, who was deeply impressed by the positive impact the shed has on men’s lives.

Located on the West Midlands Showground in Berwick Road, Shrewsbury, the Men’s Shed has transformed a set of dilapidated stables into a vibrant community hub over the past four years. Spanning 270 square metres, the facility serves as a workshop and social space for its members, who contribute their time and skills to maintain and develop the initiative.

With a current membership of 140, the shed not only fosters friendship among men facing various challenges, such as bereavement, dementia, and cancer, but it also provides a venue for skill-sharing in areas like woodworking, metalworking, and horticulture. The organization aims to expand its offerings to include arts, crafts, and pottery, catering to those who may struggle with more physically demanding activities.

Operating at a cost of £1,200 per month, the Men’s Shed raises funds through subscriptions, hire fees, and sales of members’ creations, alongside donations and grants. The members have undertaken various community projects, such as restoring Percy Thrower’s old greenhouse to cultivate plants, refurbishing town centre benches for the Shrewsbury Town Council, and constructing market stalls for local markets.

According to Simon Rouse, chairman of Shrewsbury Men’s Shed, the initiative plays a crucial role in preventing suicide and addressing loneliness among men. “We help men feel that they have a role, a purpose in life, and value to the community,” he noted. He added that the shed is one of the most referred organizations for social prescribing in Shropshire, working closely with local health teams and support services.

The demographic of the shed’s members spans from 19 to 92, with many in their retirement years. Rouse emphasized that many members are bereaved, including fathers coping with the loss of children. The organization has created a complete cross-section of society, providing essential support to those in need.

The partnership with Morris Lubricants is particularly meaningful to the shed. Rouse expressed gratitude for the company’s commitment, stating, “We are incredibly grateful for this meaningful contribution towards our running costs from a well-respected company that has been associated with Shrewsbury for more than 150 years.” The donation also encompasses supplies such as oils, lubricants, and greases, further aiding the shed’s operations.

Goddard remarked on the valuable service provided by the Men’s Shed, highlighting its role in promoting mental health and allowing members to utilize their working skills. He emphasized the importance of such facilities, noting that many retired individuals, particularly those who have previously engaged in manual work, could benefit from the community the shed offers.

“There are many lonely, bereaved men whose social network has diminished through work,” he stated. “The shed gives them an opportunity to socialise and make new friends, and Morris Lubricants is proud to support this fantastic and important charity project.”
