The recent vandalism of the Spomenik Josipu Brozu Titu, a monument commemorating the former Yugoslav president, has sparked outrage among local officials in Crna Gora. The act involved the application of red paint over Tito’s name on the monument located on the Boulevard of Saint Peter of Cetinje in the city’s center. Radojica Radojević, president of the Society of the National Liberation Movement of Montenegro (SOBNOR), issued a strong condemnation of the incident, calling it a blatant disrespect for the anti-fascist heritage of the region.
In his statement, Radojević emphasized the importance of preserving the integrity of historical monuments associated with the anti-fascist struggle. He urged relevant authorities to identify those responsible for this “uncivilized act” and to impose appropriate sanctions. “We raise our voices and demand that the perpetrators of this act be revealed and that the public is informed about the measures taken,” he declared.
Radojević further articulated SOBNOR’s commitment to defending the revolutionary traditions that honor the sacrifices made by fighters of the National Liberation War (NOR). His remarks serve as a reminder to those who might engage in similar acts of vandalism, urging them to refrain from actions that insult anti-fascist sentiments. “We will energetically oppose all forces and individuals who deny the National Liberation Movement while glorifying fascism and defeated forces,” he stated.
The incident reflects broader concerns about the resurgence of extremist ideologies, prompting Radojević to call on all anti-fascists and honorable citizens to join the fight against any form of revived fascism, nationalism, and historical revisionism. His appeal resonates in a time when the protection of historical narratives and collective memory is increasingly under threat.
As communities across the globe grapple with the legacy of their past, the preservation of monuments like the Spomenik Josipu Brozu Titu remains crucial. These structures not only commemorate historical figures but also embody the values of freedom and resistance against tyranny. The response from local authorities and community members in Crna Gora will be closely monitored as they address this act of vandalism and its implications for societal values.
