Moray Libraries Launch New Digital Tools for Research Enthusiasts

Moray Council has introduced two significant research tools for its library members— the British Newspaper Archive and Ancestry Library Edition. These resources are now readily available at all Moray libraries, enhancing the ability for residents to engage with historical research and genealogical exploration.

The British Newspaper Archive allows users to access millions of historical newspaper articles from around the world. With a library membership card, individuals can perform free searches and delve into a vast collection of newspapers that span various periods and topics. This tool opens up a new avenue for understanding past events and societal changes through the lens of journalism.

In addition, the Ancestry Library Edition offers patrons a unique opportunity to trace their family history. This resource includes UK records for births, deaths, marriages, military service, and more. Users can explore UK census records, parish records, and immigration and emigration records, providing a comprehensive view of their ancestry.

Accessing Resources and Community Impact

Library users can access these powerful tools on library computers, which are available free of charge. To ensure availability, it is advisable to book a session in advance. Alternatively, patrons can utilize public Wi-Fi to connect their personal devices and access the resources remotely.

Cllr Kathleen Robertson, Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Children’s and Leisure Services committee, expressed enthusiasm for the new offerings: “We’re delighted to offer these new digital resources to our community. Whether you’re researching your family tree or exploring historical events, these tools provide a wealth of information right at your fingertips.”

By integrating these resources into the library system, Moray Council aims to enrich educational opportunities and foster a deeper connection among community members to their history and heritage.

The addition of the British Newspaper Archive and Ancestry Library Edition reflects a growing trend among libraries worldwide, focusing on digital resources that meet the evolving needs of their users. These tools not only empower individuals to conduct personal research but also enhance the cultural fabric of the community.

For residents of Moray, these developments signal a commitment to providing robust educational resources that encourage exploration and learning, making history and family connections more accessible than ever.
