19-Year-Old Driver Kills Three College Students in Arizona Crash

URGENT UPDATE: A tragic crash in Tucson, Arizona, has left three college students dead after a 19-year-old driver collided with them while speeding in a Porsche. The incident occurred at approximately 11 PM on November 2, 2025, at a marked crosswalk near the University of Arizona, police confirm.

Louis John Artal allegedly lost control of his $60,000 2019 Porsche Boxster and struck Sophia Akimi Troetel, 21, and her boyfriend Josiah Patrick Santos, 22, who were walking in the crosswalk. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. A third victim, Katya Rosaura Castillo Mendoza, 21, was critically injured and later succumbed to her injuries on November 4, 2025.

Witnesses reported that Artal was speeding well above the posted 30 mph speed limit when he crashed into the pedestrians. Authorities have confirmed that Artal was impaired at the time of the collision. After fleeing the scene, he turned himself in to police early the following morning and is currently facing serious charges, including three counts of second-degree murder and one count of leaving the scene of an accident involving death.

During his initial court appearance, a judge set Artal’s bail at $250,000. The court heard emotional testimonies from family members of the victims. Troetel’s mother, Shannon, expressed her anguish, stating, “She was just 21… She contributed greatly to her school and her community.”

The heartbreaking hearing included remarks from Mendoza’s sister, Allison Salinas, who was in the ICU as her sister’s condition worsened. “We are completely broken,” she tearfully stated. “Losing her has torn our family apart.”

Santos’ mother, Mathia Santos, also addressed the court, expressing disbelief that Artal fled the scene. “I cannot believe you drove away and left them there! May God have mercy on you,” she implored.

In the wake of this tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist the families of the victims, raising over $26,000 within days. The University of Arizona has extended its condolences, providing support for students, faculty, and staff affected by the incident.

Student Body President Adriana Grijalva announced plans to honor the memory of the deceased students, highlighting the profound impact of their loss on the university community.

As investigations continue, the Tucson Police Department emphasizes the need for increased awareness of pedestrian safety. Community members are urged to remain vigilant as the case unfolds, with many awaiting further legal proceedings against Artal.

This devastating incident serves as a reminder of the real-life consequences of reckless driving and impaired judgment on the road.
