Moray Council libraries have introduced two significant research tools for their members, enhancing access to historical and genealogical information. Starting immediately, library users can now explore the British Newspaper Archive and Ancestry Library Edition, both of which are designed to facilitate in-depth research into history and family backgrounds.
The British Newspaper Archive provides access to millions of newspaper articles from around the world. Library members can conduct free searches and gain access to historical newspapers using their library membership card. This resource enables users to uncover historical events and narratives that have shaped their communities and the world at large.
In addition to the newspaper archive, the Ancestry Library Edition allows individuals to trace their family histories. This tool includes UK records related to births, deaths, marriages, and military service, as well as essential documents like UK census records, parish records, and immigration and emigration records. The availability of these resources supports individuals in connecting with their heritage and understanding their family backgrounds more profoundly.
To access these resources, library members can use library PCs free of charge, although it is advisable to book in advance to ensure availability. Alternatively, users can connect to public Wi-Fi and access these databases on personal devices, providing flexibility in how they engage with the materials.
Cllr Kathleen Robertson, Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Children’s and Leisure Services committee, expressed enthusiasm about the new offerings. She stated, “We’re delighted to offer these new digital resources to our community. Whether you’re researching your family tree or exploring historical events, these tools provide a wealth of information right at your fingertips.”
The introduction of these tools marks a significant advancement in the resources available at Moray libraries. By integrating modern digital research capabilities, the council aims to empower its community with knowledge and information, fostering a greater understanding of both personal and collective histories. This initiative serves as a valuable asset for residents looking to engage more deeply with their past and the broader historical context in which they live.
