RSF Takes Control of Darfur Amid Allegations of Civilian Massacres

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have seized control of el-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, following a prolonged siege that intensified over the past 18 months. This takeover marks a significant shift in the dynamics of power in the region, as the RSF’s advance comes amid serious allegations of civilian massacres. Reports indicate that approximately 460 individuals were killed in a recent incident at a local hospital, triggering widespread condemnation from international authorities.

Dr. Alaaeldin Nugud, a spokesperson for the Leadership Council of the Sudan Founding Alliance (TASIS), which is closely associated with RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, firmly denied these allegations. In an interview, Dr. Nugud stated, “This is not true. There is no video evidence for RSF killing 460 [people].” He claimed that the purported footage of the incident was misidentified, suggesting that it originated from a different location, not a hospital.

International Condemnation and Allegations Denied

The head of the World Health Organization, expressing outrage, described the reported killings as “appalling and deeply shocking.” These comments reflect growing international concern about the humanitarian impact of the ongoing conflict in Sudan. Families displaced by the violence in el-Fasher have sought refuge in nearby Tawila, where the humanitarian situation is reportedly dire.

Dr. Nugud suggested that the allegations against the RSF are part of a broader disinformation campaign aimed at undermining the paramilitary group’s reputation. He asserted that elements within the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have been complicit in atrocities while masquerading in RSF uniforms. “Many of the SAF soldiers were wearing the RSF uniforms and contemplating atrocities in many places of Sudan during this war,” he stated.

Despite these claims, Dr. Nugud acknowledged that isolated incidents of violence have occurred, noting that accountability measures are being implemented. He cited the recent arrest of a fighter known as Abu Lulu, who has been linked to videos depicting the execution of unarmed civilians. “There are some individual atrocities and they are getting accountable,” he added.

Claims of Foreign Support and Sudan’s Future

As tensions escalate, Dr. Nugud refuted claims that the RSF is attempting to divide Sudan into separate regions. He emphasized that the TASIS-led government is committed to maintaining national unity. “The TASIS peace government is the only guarantee for the unity of Sudan,” he asserted.

Furthermore, he rejected allegations of foreign backing, particularly from the United Arab Emirates, labeling them as “very big lies.” He attributed these narratives to propaganda efforts by political opponents, including the National Congress Party (NCP) and the Muslim Brotherhood. “We are not backed by anyone. We are only depending on ourselves,” Dr. Nugud concluded.

The situation in Sudan remains precarious as the RSF consolidates its power in Darfur. The international community is closely monitoring developments, with calls for investigations into the reported atrocities and concerns about the future stability of the region.
