Police Arrest Suspect for Illegal Gravel Extraction in Montenegro

A 64-year-old man identified as V.M. has been arrested during an operation aimed at curbing illegal gravel extraction along the Moraca River in Montenegro. This action, named “Kajak,” was conducted by the Police Administration of Montenegro, which is intensifying efforts to combat environmental crimes.

Authorities discovered a work machine actively excavating material from state-owned land. The machine was operated by V.M., who was loading the extracted gravel into his vehicle, bearing registration marks from Zeta. During the inspection, police teams were enforcing regulations in the designated area near the river.

According to a statement from the police, the operation was executed under the directive of the Basic State Prosecutor’s Office in Podgorica. The prosecutor’s office confirmed that both the work machine and the vehicle were temporarily seized. They indicated that V.M.’s actions could constitute the criminal offenses of unauthorized extraction and damage during the extraction of river deposits. Following the investigation, he will be brought before the prosecutor for further legal proceedings.

The police, in collaboration with other relevant agencies, are committed to enhancing coordinated efforts to prevent criminal acts and offenses related to illegal gravel extraction. This initiative is part of a broader strategy focused on combating environmental crimes and the degradation of Montenegro’s natural resources. The goal is to preserve the environment and ensure adherence to legal regulations.

The arrest serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in tackling ecological issues. As illegal extraction continues to threaten natural habitats, authorities are stepping up their commitment to protect Montenegro’s diverse ecosystems.
