BMW has commenced winter testing for its upcoming electric saloon, the Neue Klasse i3, at its training centre in Arjeplog, Sweden. The vehicle is set to make its design debut on March 18, 2024. This new model aims to embody the sporty characteristics of the BMW 3 Series while redefining electric mobility through innovative technology.
The Head of the Neue Klasse project, Mike Reichelt, highlighted the vehicle’s design philosophy, noting, “The BMW i3 applies the sporty sedan’s typical characteristics to a completely new vehicle concept defined by the BMW 3 Series DNA.” He emphasized the commitment to pushing the boundaries of electric mobility with this new architecture.
Advanced Technology and Driving Dynamics
The i3 features a central control unit known as the ‘Heart of Joy,’ which serves as one of four key components in the Neue Klasse architecture. This advanced system integrates with BMW’s proprietary Dynamic Performance Control software, managing essential functions including the powertrain, steering, brakes, and energy recuperation. Notably, the system boasts response times that are ten times faster than previous models.
Winter testing in Arjeplog offers BMW an ideal environment to evaluate the vehicle’s performance under extreme conditions. The snowy roads and frozen lakes provide a rigorous backdrop for assessing the i3’s driving dynamics and suspension systems. Despite the challenging conditions, the ‘Heart of Joy’ ensures agile propulsion and driving stability, thanks to the rapid processing capabilities of its electric motors.
The i3 is designed to deliver a smooth and responsive driving experience, characteristic of the BMW brand. The innovative soft-stop function allows for precise control of the electric motors, enabling seamless stops and enhancing overall efficiency.
Performance Specifications and Future Release
The BMW Neue Klasse i3 is scheduled for a market introduction in the second half of 2026. It is expected to achieve a peak charging capacity of approximately 400 kW, along with remarkable performance figures of 469 bhp and 645 Nm of torque. This combination positions the i3 as a competitive offering in the burgeoning electric vehicle market.
