EasyJet Passenger Found Guilty of Attempted Child Assault

UPDATE: A 38-year-old man, Ramiz Idrizi, was found guilty today of multiple offenses aboard an easyJet flight, including the attempted sexual assault of a girl under 13 years old. The verdict was delivered at Ballymena Magistrates’ Court following a harrowing incident during a flight from Paris to Belfast International on November 14, 2022.

The court heard chilling details as Idrizi, who had consumed most of five small wine bottles, displayed alarming behavior shortly before landing. Witnesses reported that he aggressively kicked the seat of the girl’s mother and made inappropriate comments, stating, “I’m horny,” while reaching towards the child’s leg. This prompted the young girl to leap up in fear.

A fellow passenger, who observed the unsettling scene, testified about seeing a “flash of a hand” near the girl, noting that both mother and child were visibly distressed. When confronted, Idrizi responded with an offensive remark, stating, “your mother’s a slut.” The atmosphere on the flight deteriorated further when Idrizi was reported to have been spitting and talking to himself, alarming others around him.

Flight attendants were made aware of the situation and attempted to intervene, announcing that alcohol service was halted. Idrizi refused to comply with requests to hand over his remaining alcohol or to change seats. As the plane approached landing, he was seen “punching the wall of the fuselage,” escalating concerns among passengers.

Idrizi took the stand, admitting to using abusive language but denying the attempted assault on the young girl. He claimed any contact with her seat was accidental as he attempted to stand up. However, District Judge Nigel Broderick found the testimonies of the witnesses, which included both civilians and cabin crew, to be credible and reliable.

In light of the verdict, Judge Broderick stated, “In fairness to the defendant, I’m going to get a report.” Idrizi was released on bail, with a sentencing date set for April 28.

This disturbing case brings to light the concerning behavior of intoxicated passengers on flights and the ongoing need for vigilance to ensure the safety of all travelers, especially minors. As the legal proceedings continue, this case serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that come with air travel and the protection of vulnerable individuals in confined spaces.

Stay tuned as we follow this developing story and its implications for air travel safety.
