Urgent Plea: Aberdeenshire Council Warns Against Battery Disposal

URGENT UPDATE: Aberdeenshire Council is sounding the alarm on battery disposal following two alarming fire incidents this year. Residents are urged to keep batteries out of household bins to prevent potential fires that can jeopardize community safety and disrupt local services.

Just recently, fires broke out at a waste transfer station in Aberdeenshire, prompting immediate action from staff. One incident occurred during the loading of a lorry, while another fire ignited in a container shed. Fortunately, staff managed to extinguish both fires before they spread further.

“We are fortunate to have such quick-thinking staff,” stated Councillor Alan Turner, Chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Infrastructure Services Committee. “A fire in a waste shed would have a significant impact on waste collections, not to mention the potential costs and environmental damage.”

Batteries pose a severe risk when tossed into bins as they can ignite upon crushing or puncturing. This situation not only endangers workers but also threatens the surrounding environment and the integrity of community services.

To mitigate these risks, residents are urged to recycle their batteries properly. Aberdeenshire Council emphasizes that batteries contain valuable materials such as lead, nickel, zinc, and cobalt, which can be reused indefinitely if recycled correctly. Here’s how residents can safely dispose of their batteries:

  • Drop off batteries at local recycling points; many supermarkets have designated bins.
  • Visit household recycling centres that accept larger batteries in WEEE containers.
  • Utilize pink household battery bags, available for free at local recycling centres, libraries, or service points. Residents can fill these bags and place them on top of their kerbside bins for collection.

Residents can also tie an empty battery bag to their kerbside bin, ensuring that collection crews will replace it with a new roll when available.

As Aberdeenshire Council continues to address these urgent issues, community cooperation is vital. By recycling batteries, residents not only help protect their community but also contribute to a sustainable future, turning waste into new products and reducing environmental harm.

Ensure the safety of local workers and the continuity of waste collection services by taking action today. Remember, recycling batteries is not just a responsibility; it’s a community necessity. Share this vital information with friends and family to spread awareness!
