Emmanuel Petit, a former Arsenal player, has suggested that Xabi Alonso would likely prefer a managerial role at Liverpool over succeeding Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. Alonso, recently dismissed from his position at Real Madrid, has emerged as a candidate to take the helm at City, where Guardiola’s future remains uncertain.
Currently, Pep Guardiola is under contract with Manchester City until 2027, but speculation about his departure has intensified. Reports indicate there is an “extremely strong chance” he may leave this season, despite his contract extending beyond this year. Should he choose to exit, Manchester City could look to Alonso, due to his previous connections to the club.
Yet, Liverpool is also reportedly interested in Alonso as they seek a new manager after a challenging season. Their current coach, Arne Slot, is facing scrutiny following a disappointing title defense in the Premier League. Petit emphasized Alonso’s ties to Liverpool, where he enjoyed significant success, including winning the Champions League.
Speaking to Ignition Casino, Petit stated, “If Xabi Alonso has the chance to come back to Liverpool, even if the door is open at Manchester City, I’m pretty sure he would join Liverpool.” He further noted Alonso’s history with Liverpool, explaining that, “He’s been a player over there and he won trophies over there. He failed at Real Madrid but that has been the case for many managers over there.”
Alonso’s potential return to the Premier League has garnered attention, particularly with Liverpool’s interest. Petit compared Alonso’s situation to that of Mikel Arteta, the current Arsenal manager, suggesting that the emotional connection to a former club could influence Alonso’s decision. “It would mean he wouldn’t consider joining Manchester City even when Pep Guardiola leaves,” Petit remarked.
Despite the rumors surrounding Guardiola’s future, he has consistently reiterated his commitment to Manchester City. In January, when questioned about his tenure, he stated, “I have a contract. I said a thousand million times. It’s 10 years here. I will leave one day, but I have a contract.” His responses have remained firm, indicating he is not contemplating a departure at this time.
The Times has reported that rival executives within the Premier League believe this could be Guardiola’s last season in charge at City. Nevertheless, the manager has dismissed such claims, maintaining that he will honor his contract.
As for Alonso, he remains open to opportunities in the Premier League but appears willing to wait until the summer to make a definitive decision about his future. His recent experiences at Real Madrid, coupled with interest from two of England’s top clubs, position Alonso at a crossroads as he considers his next career move.
