The North Powys primary school has received commendations for its commitment to providing a safe and inclusive environment for students. Following a positive inspection report from Estyn, published in January 2024, the school was recognized by Powys County Council for fostering a calm and nurturing atmosphere where pupils feel valued and supported in their learning journey.
The Estyn report noted that nearly all pupils demonstrate good behaviour and positive attitudes, contributing to a strong and inclusive ethos within the school community. Inspectors highlighted the effective leadership of the acting headteacher, who has collaborated closely with staff and governors to enhance self-evaluation processes and implement meaningful improvements. This leadership has established a clear vision that raises pupils’ aspirations and nurtures a robust sense of belonging.
Curriculum and Progress
The curriculum received high praise for its relevance to the school’s context, engaging pupils’ interests while providing valuable opportunities to learn about various cultures. It also encourages the development of Welsh language skills and exploration of the wider world. Inspectors reported significant progress among nearly all pupils, including those with additional learning needs and those eligible for free school meals, thanks to tailored wellbeing support.
Recent professional development initiatives have focused on enhancing teaching methods in mathematics and English, resulting in improved basic skills across the school. The school’s educators were commended for promoting independence through thoughtfully designed classroom environments, contributing to a positive learning experience.
James Gibson-Watt, Powys County Council’s cabinet member for learning, emphasized the school’s dedication to its learners. He stated, “What stands out most in Llandysilio’s Estyn report is the school’s unwavering commitment to its learners. In a short period of change, the staff and leadership team have created a calm, uplifting environment where children feel genuinely supported and motivated to succeed.”
Gibson-Watt also highlighted the strong relationships between pupils and staff, the renewed focus on high aspirations, and clear improvements in core skills as factors ensuring that learners receive the quality of teaching and care they deserve. He expressed particular satisfaction in how well the school supports pupils of all abilities, stating, “It is especially encouraging to see how effectively the school supports pupils of all abilities – including those with additional learning needs – enabling nearly all of them to make good progress from their starting points.”
Community Commitment
The council remains committed to placing learners at the heart of its initiatives, with Llandysilio serving as a powerful example of this philosophy in action. Gibson-Watt thanked the entire school community for their dedication and the positive impact they are making on children’s lives.
The commendations from both the Estyn report and Powys County Council reaffirm the North Powys primary school’s role as a model for inclusive education, encouraging a supportive and engaging learning environment for all students.
